Northline project planning guideFrench drain installation: is it right for your yard?
Learn what to ask about French drain assessment, discharge, installation scope, and maintenance before requesting a contractor connection.
Start with the problem rather than the product
A French drain commonly uses a gravel-filled trench and a perforated pipe to collect and redirect subsurface water. That description does not mean it is appropriate for every wet yard. The water source, soil conditions, slopes, and discharge options all matter, and an independent contractor should evaluate the site.
Surface water and subsurface water are different
Water flowing over the ground and water moving through the soil can call for different approaches. Describe what you can observe rather than choosing a system in advance. Ask the contractor why their proposed approach fits the problem and whether alternatives should be considered.
Ask where the water will go
A collection system needs an appropriate discharge plan. Ask the contractor to explain the route and outlet, any maintenance access, and applicable local requirements. Do not assume water can be redirected onto another property. Installation decisions should follow a property-specific assessment.
Review the installation scope
Discuss the proposed trench route, materials, excavation, site access, utility checks, and restoration. Ask what is included in the estimate and what could change after excavation. Request written details of any warranty instead of relying on a general promise that the yard will never hold water again.
Understand maintenance and next steps
Ask what inspections or cleaning the proposed system may need and how to recognize a blockage or damaged outlet. Northline can review your project inquiry for independent contractor availability; we do not design or install French drains. Include your ZIP code and describe where and when the water appears.

Ask about contractor availability ↗Compare the proposal with the problem
Use the checklist for standing water after rain and our guide to yard drainage solutions to describe the symptoms. A proposal involving earthwork raises the separate questions in our guide to yard grading and drainage. Use the yard drainage cost worksheet to compare quoted scope, and review how to choose a drainage contractor before you sign. Then submit your project inquiry if you want Northline to review availability.
