Home / Yard Drainage Cost: How to Compare Estimates
Northline project planning guideYard drainage cost: compare the work, not just the price.
There is no property-specific price without a defined scope. This guide helps you compare yard drainage, French drain installation, and grading estimates without relying on an unsupported national average.
Start with an assessment and a defined problem
Ask whether the contractor charges for a site visit, what the assessment includes, and how the proposed work addresses your observations. A quote for one low spot is not directly comparable with a proposal for a larger drainage route. Northline does not set contractor prices or provide construction estimates.
Compare excavation, materials, and access
Request an itemized scope describing the proposed system, materials, excavation, and site access. Ask whether restricted access, removal of existing materials, or work around established features changes the scope. The useful question is what each contractor has included, not which quote uses the fewest line items.
Ask about discharge, approvals, and restoration
Discuss where collected water would be directed and who checks applicable local requirements. Ask whether utility checks, permits if applicable, finish grading, seed or sod, and cleanup are included. Avoid assuming that an installation quote covers every part of returning the yard to use.
French drain installation cost questions
For a proposed French drain, ask about the intended route, materials, outlet, maintenance access, and restoration. Request an explanation of why subsurface drainage is appropriate for the assessed problem. Compare proposals on the same scope; a short system description can hide differences in what work is included.
Review exclusions and possible changes
Ask which conditions could change the price after work begins, how changes are approved, and what is excluded. Request written payment terms and any warranty details directly from the contractor. A lower initial number is difficult to evaluate if the proposal leaves key work undefined.
Prepare comparable contractor conversations
Give each contractor the same ZIP code, project description, observations, and photos when requested. Keep the proposed scope and assumptions with each estimate so you can compare them side by side. Submit a Northline inquiry to ask about availability; independent contractors handle assessments, pricing, agreements, and the work itself.
Compare two drainage estimates
Enter prices from written quotes and mark which scope items each includes. We calculate only your entered amounts and flag unanswered questions. No national average or Northline quote is substituted.
Estimate A
Estimate B
Blank additional costs count as $0 in this arithmetic only. Unspecified or excluded work may add costs. A lower entered total does not establish equivalent work or the right drainage design. Values stay on this page and are not submitted or saved.
