Northline project planning guide

Yard drainage solutions start with understanding the water.

Understand what to document about a soggy yard, compare drainage project questions, and ask Northline about independent contractor availability.

What to observe before contacting a contractor

Record where water collects, when it appears, and how long it remains after rain. Note whether it seems to come from a downspout, an adjoining slope, or a low spot. Photos taken from the same safe location before and after rainfall can help explain the problem. You do not need to diagnose the cause yourself.

Describe the property, not just the symptom

Include your ZIP code, the approximate area affected, nearby structures, and any drainage work you know about. Mention whether water is limited to the lawn or is also entering a building. A yard inquiry is not an emergency response service; do not wait for a referral if there is an immediate hazard.

Questions for an on-site assessment

Ask how the contractor will identify the water source, assess slopes, and determine a suitable discharge location. Ask whether the proposal addresses surface runoff, subsurface water, or both. Request a written scope explaining proposed work, restoration, exclusions, and who is responsible for applicable approvals.

Compare a complete scope

A useful estimate explains more than a product name. Discuss access, excavation, utility considerations, finish grading, lawn restoration, and ongoing maintenance. Costs and suitability depend on the property. Northline does not provide construction estimates or prescribe a drainage system.

Ask about local availability

Northline is recruiting independent residential drainage contractors across US markets. Share your location and project details to ask whether a relevant connection is available. Coverage is being established; a referral is not guaranteed. You select and contract with the independent contractor directly.

Choose the next planning step

For recurring puddles, use the observation plan for standing water in your yard after rain. If a proposal names a French drain, review our questions about French drain installation; if it focuses on changing slopes, review the yard grading and drainage checklist. Before choosing between quotes, use the yard drainage cost worksheet to compare their included work and prices, and check each company against our guide on how to choose a drainage contractor. You can then ask Northline about contractor availability.
